REQUIREMENTS:
68020 or greater
ARTA equipped Macintosh (Quadra 840av, Centris 660av, or Mac with ARTA
plug-in board.
1. WHAT IT IS: ARTAbrot is a Mandelbrot program that it uses the AT&T
DSP3210 in ARTA to perform the intensive Mandelbrot calculations.
2. SOURCE CODE TOO! Complete source code is provided. For those who
would like some sample ARTA source code (which is scarce at the time of
this release). The DSP3210 source code is in file mbrot.s. All of the host
DSP function calls are in brotcode.c. For those of you considering DSP
programming, take a look at the mbrot.s DSP source code. This is DSP3210
assembly code, but it is very much like C code -- one of the very nice
features of the DSP3210.
Release 1.1 11/22/93 Added support for larger windows, resizable
windows,
and background processing.

This is the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) list for comp.sys.mac.comm
=======================================================================
This list of frequently asked questions and answers is intended to help
reduce the number of "often asked questions" that make the rounds here
in comp.sys.mac.comm. Since comp.sys.mac.comm is intended as a forum to
discuss telecommunication (and related issues) that are specific to the
Macintosh, most questions about modems, telecommunications in general,
and other non-Macintosh specific communication questions are not listed
here. The proper newsgroup for such questions is usually comp.dcom.modems.

- Decor now uses a preferences file, which makes updating completely

Gate reminds me very much of a couple of earlier Mac games I

Greetings! 25th November, 1993
This archive contains version 1.2 of Japanese Prelector, an interactive
study system for students of Japanese. The major new features of this
version include:
* a 'superquick' answer mode (2 mouse clicks)
* additional Kanji readings can be added by users
* SmartSearch2 has been implemented
* Hiragana and Katakana beginners files are supplied in this archive
* the mix of current and learnt words used during exercises can be adjusted
* greater user help, including tutorial guide, FAQs and overview
* the 3000 word Reference Dictionary V2 is now bundled with the Japanese
Prelector Pack
This software has been designed specifically to improve the effectiveness
of learning in two important areas of Japanese language - vocabulary and
Kanji. It also functions as a powerful computerised dictionary, aids
students in the formation of correct grammar, and assists teachers in
arranging and controlling aspects of course content.
I hope you enjoy using this comprehensive new package, and welcome your
comments and suggestions. I also look forward to receiving multitudinous
registrations from all those hard working students out there doing Japanese
language courses. Like me, you've probably been thinking that there must be
a more interesting and effective way of studying. Well, your time has finally
come ... enjoy ... :-)
Please direct all enquiries to Michael Wildoer at:

Note: this archive is self protecting, such that the program will not run

Subject: [*] LaunchPad 3.0.1
Application: LaunchPad(tm) 3.0.1
(Shareware, $11)
Changes from version 3.0:
LaunchPad 3.0.1 is a maintenance release that allows LaunchPad
and LaunchPad Valet to peacefully coexist with certain extension
combinations.
Description:
LaunchPad is a simple utility designed to let you keep a
clean desktop, but still maintain convenient access to
System 7's drop-launching features. LaunchPad serves as a
drag-and-drop dock for any applications that you choose.
You simply drag documents to the LaunchPad icon, and then
select an application to launch from the "get file" dialog.
The dropped documents will then be opened using the selected
application (if possible).
LaunchPad also facilitates automated drop-launching with Valet
Launching(tm). With the included utility, LaunchPad Valet(tm),
you can configure LaunchPad to automate your most frequent drop-
launching tasks.
With LaunchPad, you keep your desktop clean and take
advantage of System 7's drop-launching.
So why use drop-launching or LaunchPad? If this question
comes to mind, then you are probably one of the many people
who have yet to experience just how convenient drop-
launching can be. Drop-launching makes many tasks much
easier. See the enclosed documentation for useful examples.

arcade game from GameTek and New Reality. The demo will play on
any Mac with color quickdraw and can be played in 256, 16 or
B&W color mode.
MacAttack is a version of Tempest/Arashi, but with rendered
30-fps 3D graphics. The demo has 3 levels of play and a several
characters from the commercial version of the game which has 30
levels and over a dozen types of enemies to fight.
I am in no way involved with the people who created this game.
I'm just passing it along to the Internet archives. It was
originally uploaded from America Online.

Members Only will scan your network for other Macintoshes, and build a list of
their users' names. You can select users from this list and add them to your
Users & Groups. You can also import users from a tab-delimited text file.
Works
with System 7 File Sharing and AppleShare 3.0 or later.
BUGS FIXED
* Fixed the nefarious -108 CopyUGFile startup error. This seemed to only show
up on the Quadra.
* NBP lookup buffer overflow is now handled properly. This would occur when
scanning a very large network.
* The "Password" column is now properly recognized when importing users.
Previously, if your import file had no "Zone" column, then passwords were
incorrectly ignored.
* Improved zone lookup error reporting.

This is an update to Open Book 1.0. You need version 1.0 (previously
uploaded to info-mac) to perform the update. Version 1.01 fixes a problem
which occurred when using a non-KanjiTalk system. Sometimes the Kanji
characters would disappear and would not reappear until the dictionary was
closed and reopened again.
Open Book is a tool for students of Japanese. You can input your own word
list, and practice recognition of Kanji, pronounciation etc. in various
ways.
Open Book displays Kanji on any Mac, but needs Japanese system software for
input of new Kanji. (This means that students can take home dictionaries

system software!!)
All the words that you input are automatically pronounced during practice!!

November 23, 1993
The enclosed file is a bin-hexed/compact-pro archive. I am the author of this
FreeWare system extension, which I call "sAVe the Disk".
sAVe the Disk 1.0 will alleviate the excessive disk drive hits experienced by
owners of AV Macs in the following two circumstances:
1) The traps ChangedResource and AddResource flush the whole file to disk each
time they are invoked. This significantly degrades performance if many
resources are changed in succession, e.g. while linking programs or running
resource compilers.
2) Each time a sound channel is allocated (disposed) some information is read
from (written to) the file DSP Preferences. Applications which follow
Apple's recommendations create and destroy such a channel for each single
sound they produce and thus slow down while they torture your harddisk.
This problem becomes most obvious with games.
Note that the recently uploaded extension AV Speedup 1.0 addresses only the
first set of problems, while sAVe the Disk deals with the sound related stuff,
too.
I developed and tested sAVe the Disk on my Centris/Quadra 660av running System
7.1 and version 1.1 of the System Enabler 088, but it should also work on a
Quadra 840av. Although it has not caused me any trouble I'm not responsible

Subject: [*] Siege of Darkwood 1.0.hqx
Siege of Darkwood is a fantasy roleplaying game where you become Captain of
the
Guard. The city is under attack from a great army lead by an evil creature
named "Torque". Sages in the town say he is from another plane, but all you
know is that it is your job to stop him. You may purchase weapons, armor,
potions, or magic items at the start or during your quest. You may also try
your hand at the gaming hall where dice games may be played.
There are ten combat phases, each getting more difficult than the previous.
You
select a troop to fight, each consisting of 1-3 creatures, and try your best
to
defeat them in combat. Combat is not your only worry however. If the creatures
move adjacent to the city walls, they may have the opportunity to attack
them.
The walls may only take so much damage before collapsing. It is your job to
defeat those nearest the wall (if possible), to avoid the destruction of the
city.
Siege of Darkwood is a sequel of sorts to Darkwood. It continues the Darkwood
storyline, following the peasant Derek, who in winning in the arena, was given
the post of Captain of the Guard.
This game requires at least system 6.0.7 and you must have at least 8-bit
color
to play this game. I have kept a similar simple interface, such as that used
in
Darkwood. I have however, attempted to add a bit more strategy to the game,
advancing the complexity of the game just a bit. I hope you enjoy this game.

no
modifications are made to the version uploaded. I have access to AOL and have
already uploaded it there, but lack accounts with other services.

Mandarin is a small Macintosh FREEWARE program I wrote in the past

Mandarin aloud* through the Macintosh's speakers. :-)
You can enjoy listening to Mandarin Chinese as you might a radio, and
better yet, Mandarin can run in the background, while you are working
on your term paper, viewing an image, or whatever you feel like. :-) It
is also helpful for those who may wish to learn how to speak Mandarin
Chinese: just run Mandarin in background, and use any Chinese viewer
in the front to display the characters. (*please note, you will need to
make a duplicate copy of your Chinese file for viewing*) This program
is also a good tool for proofreading. No special hardware is needed on
your mac, just double-click and have fun.

Subject: [*] Toner Tuner demo
Enclosed is the Toner Tuner(TM) Demo version 1.0.3.
Toner Tuner, one of the Working Software Printing Utilities,
allows you to save toner or ink when making draft prints.
It works by printing drafts in light gray. It works with
QuickDraw and PostScript printers - ink jet or laser printers,
and it works with System 6 and System 7.
Toner Tuner is reviewed in the December, 1993 Macworld,
page 79, and is in the December 1993 MacUser 100. Other
Working Software Printing Utilities include Working Watermarker(TM),
Working PrintLogger(TM), and Working PrintStamper(TM).
This demo works just like Tuner Tuner, but it prints obnoxious
information in the center of each "Toner-Tuned" page :-) :-).
This only happens when you turn Toner Tuner on in the Print
dialog - it won't affect your regular printouts.

Subject: [*] WaveTrak13.hqx
Abstract:
WaveTrak is a scriptable waveform database that stores, organizes and
processes digitized waveforms. WaveTrak was written using HyperCard as
a user-friendly front end, supported by over 70 externals written in C
and assembler that perform digital filtering, power spectrum
computations, waveform math, display, import/export and much more. An
optional A/D library adds real-time data acquisition and signal
generation capabilities. Customize your application by scripting using
WaveTrak's extension to the HyperTalk language. HyperCard 2.1, a Mac
with an FPU and hard disk required. Shareware: US $49 ($69 with printed
manual). Don't be fooled by the price; this is a powerful waveform
processing and acquisition system which competes directly with
high-priced commercial applications. Featured in a recent issue of
Scientific Computing and Automation. A must for scientists and
engineers involved in processing of digitized signals! Consult the
detailed user's manual (WaveTrakDocs.hqx) or contact the author for more

I just experienced identical failures on two Apple 14" RGB monitors within
the past year. The top 25-50 rows of pixels roll over. If I move the
cursor into this region, the cursor gets dim as I enter this area and then
as the cursor moves "off screen" it flips vertically, starts back down and
terminates at the lower edge of the band of rows . . . . as though the
upper edge of the display had rolled over.
This happened about a year ago with another Mac IIx (8-bit board) and now
it's back with a different machine. Any ideas what needs to be fixed?

There is a wonderfully powerful & incredibly simple scheduling program

This app has a great little clock that you can drag anywhere, and always

Unfortunately, I am unable to locate any such utility. Am I having

- runs on a Novell network
- both Mac & Windows clients
- dial-in ability for:

remote sites (this must be automated)
- UUCP gateway
Obviously, we need the usual e-mail stuff like groups, aliases, folders,

Subject: Font Management
Just a straight forward question in concern to fonts.
1.) I am running a graphic design station with about 1000+ fonts
2.) Looking for information or an application that will do the following:
Scan all bitmat/screen fonts, in or out of suitcases, and aquire all
of
their sizes. (e.g. 10,12,14,16,18 etc. ) Give a report of those
sizes.
Allow you to change selected fonts to certain size, purpose
explained later,
or allow you to change all bitmap sizes to one size for hard disk
efficency and
for the purpose of printing them out with the use of a font
librarian and a post
script printer.
3.) I know of programs that allow you to see the sizes you have but not set
them.
Is is possible? I have attempted to make a layout with consitent
sizes in a
graphic program and have also automate the process with a script,
however,
this is still a long process.
Maybe this is a call for an application of this type. Programs I have used
are Varityper,
Font Clerk, Suitcase, ATM, and one other that I cannot remember the name of.
Please reply directly and I will also attempt to post the results of this
inquiry.

Well, some people might object to the characterization of the game as
"simple". :) Anyway, you're probably referring to the Infocom text

(Please reply directly, & I'll post a summary if necessary.)
Hithhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was written (w/ Douglas Adams) by a company
caled Infocom. They also wrote the Zork series, if you've heard of it. They
had a grand total of about 32 games in that style (which they called
"Interactive Fiction.")
There are two compilations available now, called "The Lost Treasures of
Infocom" and "The Lost Treasures of Infocom II." The first contains 20 of
the most popluar Infocom games, and the second contains 11 more. These are
incredibly fun. They are available from MacWarehouse (800) 225-6227, for
$40 and $29.95, respectively. That comes down to about $2 per game - if you
are the type who enjoys pure fun without megabytes of graphics & sound,
these will be the best entertainment/dollar ratio that you will ever see.
(** Censored ** Please note: a fairly sarcastic & vicious video-arcade-type
bashing comment has been omitted here for the sake of internet peace 8)
Hitchhiker's Guide is in the first volume. These are also available elsewhere
for those who don't mind looking around. They are published by Activision, who
has absorbed Infocom since their original earlier existence.

Correct. It's also important to note that the Select 360 is a
Postscript level 2 printer and not just a postscript printer. There is
also a TrueType Rasterizer contained in the ROMs. The fax card turns the
Select 360 into a plain-paper network fax machine.

No. And you should never assume that an Apple 600dpi printer comes
with FinePrint and PhotoGrade since neither of these enhancement
technologies currently work at 600dpi. Currently the only shipping Apple
printers that come wth PG and FP are the LW Pro 630 and the LW Pro 810.

Probably, but why would you want to? Apple would never give you the

I'm sure I'm just one of the MANY, but what's up with the digest and
the file system? I haven't received any digests or been able to FTP
since early last week.

Subject: SLIP Problem
Dear Internetters,
I hope that there is somebody out there who is able to give some clues
regarding
the SLIP-problem described below? Because I'm stuck. I tried everything I know
of and I'm out of inspiration now.
I'm using InterSLIP 1.0.1, made available to us internet users by InterCon.
Very good of them!
After some effort to develop a correct dialing script, I managed to establish
a
SLIP connection from home to the university SLIP-server. It is a so-called
Direct Connection: the Sisco-SLIP-server does not ask (yet) for name and
password. The script dials-up, waits for the traqnet dualtone, dials the
access-code in X3-mode, hangs up and waits for immediate callback. The modem
stays in originate S0=0 mode. The detected ring triggers the script to dial
the
requested one or more asterisks for confirmation, after which the rate
negotiation process starts, is settled, SLIP is requested and the
SLIP-connection is established.
Starting e.g. TurboGopher, I am connected properly to the university home
server
host. I can use everything there........AS LONG AS NO CONNECTION OUTSIDE THIS
HOME SERVER IS NEEDED. The same counts for e.g. Fetch. Connection outside this
server is simply denied.
I a way it resembles the problem met by Blake Meike, discussed recently in
this
forum, although I doubt that a weird subnet-mask causes the trouble here (see
below).
I suspect that something is wrong with the IP-addressing, because I know that
connecting outside the home server host is denied if the IP address (in my
case)
does not start with 130.89.
BTW: With my Mac at the university itself (connected directly to the
university
network with an ethernet card and manual IP Addressing in MacTCP) I have never
met any problem connecting outside the university home server host.
I'm using MacTCP version 1.1.1. InterSLIP is selected in the MacTCP
front-window
and is configured exactly as suggested in the InterSLIP Docs. The proper
Domain
Name Server Information is supplied to MacTCP (domains according the necessary
names at my university and IP Addresses all starting with 130.89) and it is
configured to receive the IP Address from the server.
Once the SLIP connection is established, the server supplies an IP Address, as
it should do (checked with MacTCP Watcher, e.g. 130.89.5.200 - the last figure
changes with every connection between 200 and 207 - tied correctly to the
proper
name, in this case <utslip0.utwente.nl>).
Looking into MacTCP right after the SLIP connection is established reveals no
change yet. Starting e.g. TurboGopher and subsequent quitting (that is: using
MacTCP) then shows that things have changed in MacTCP.
The IP Address (e.g. 130.89.5.200) is now showing up in the IP Address box of
the front-window of MacTCP. Clicking More reveals that the Class has changed
to
B (as it should), the Subnet Mask to 255.255.0.0, Bits to 16 0 16, Net to
32987
and Node to 1480. Subnet remains 0.
HOWEVER,......the IP Address on the Class line has NOT changed to 130.89.5.200
but to 128.219.5.200, in spite of the correct IP Address in the front-window
of
MacTCP. And I do have the idea that it is this mismatching that causes the
problem described above. Anyway, it is the only visible anomaly that I can
detect.
Following a discussion between Bill Carroll and Adam C. Engst some weeks ago,
I
toggled TCP Header Compression (although it should be off) and varied the MTU
size: no improvement. BTW: the SLIP server connects with MTU=1524, which is
beyond the maximum value supported by InterSLIP. It does so (at least: it says
so on connecting SLIP), in spite of my MTU-value provided in the InterSLIP
configuration window.
I asked the network manager if he could do some packet-watching. He could, but
refused to do so since SLIP is not officially supported (look for your friends
close by..........).
I discussed over the internet with Dave Saunders of Intercon, but his point of
view is solid and logic: InterSLIP does not change anything on the
data-packets,
so the reason must be found somewhere else.
As said before: my inspiration has dried up.
I apologize for the length of this message, but I wanted to give necessary
details in order to avoid supplementary questions as much as possible.
I sincerely hope for some clues. Otherwise I'm stuck for good!
Thanks in advance,
Walter Bohle

Mr. Bloom,
Magic, (Macintosh Awareness Group In Canada), is the largest Macintosh BBS
in the world. It is run out of the home of an employee of Apple Canada,
Mark Windrim.
Apple Canada has graciously allowed Mr Windrim access to their internet
feed to transfer messages to and from the internet.
MAGIC has over 22 lines, gigabytes of storage and thousands of users. It is
free.
It uses the First Class interface by SoftArc and is truly a first class BBS.
Magic is reachable in Toronto Canada at 416-288-1767.
Please be aware that there are thousands of newcomers to the net who
communicate via BBS bridges. Perhaps you have heard of CompuServe?
I fail to understand how you connect Mr. Sienna'a inability to rename his
hard drive with "alt/binaries/dirty_pictures". I suspect your inference in
this instance is at best insulting.
I have cc:'d Mr. Sienna this message. I would suggest that you re-read your

which you posted in a public forum, and consider an apology.

Subject: So To Speak *STILL* corrupt?
I know the first upload of So To Speak was truncated and I saw a post
indicating that it was reloaded. Then a day or so later a message
indicating that it still seemed to be corrupt. Sure enough I still
can't unbinhex it after uploading. The file seems to have been this
way for at least a week and I'd really like to hear my Mac speak to
me. If the author or anyone anywhere has a working version of So To
Speak could they please download it and check that this time it's done
correctly. TIA.

Subject: Using BOTH ethernet and AppleTalk
I just bought an ethernet board to hook into
our Vax mainframe - TCP/IP, FTP and all that.
I just assumed that the board (and my software)
would talk to the wire hanging out of the wall
AND EVERYTHING ELSE would be the same.
Not.
In particular, I use AppleTalk to print stuff
out on my own LaserWriter and to share a disk
with my powerbook using AppleShare. I just assumed
that my printer port would continue to talk to
these other two machines (LW and PB) and
Ethernet would talk to the "phoneline".
Apparently, I could buy a bunch more hardware and
cables to do everything in Ether - BUT I don't want
to! Isn't there some way to make this work?
Question:
I understand that Apple and Farallon each have
some sort of software solution that will solve my
problem. Will it?
How much will it cost?
Does anyone have any experience with this situation
and can you give me any advice on how to choose
between the two?
Thanks

Hello,
I would like to be able to dial into an MVS system from home and
download using IND$FILE transfer protocols. Can anyone out there
tell me if a shareware product exists that will allow me to do this?
Using maybe 3278 or 3279 terminal emulation?
